ACER Certificates and ACER Advanced Certificates

Achievement of an ACER Certificate provides formal recognition of the high proficiency of a learner within the particular domain and particular certificate level assessed. This recognition is formally authorised by ACER.

For each domain there is an ACER Learning Progression. Each certificate level is linked to a detailed description which is part of the particular learning progression. This description provides details about the skills a learner has shown high proficiency in if the certificate is achieved.

If performance on an ACER Certificate test is exceptionally high, an ACER Advanced Certificate may be awarded. Achievement of an ACER Advanced Certificate provides formal recognition of a learner approaching mastery within the particular domain and particular certificate level assessed.

Results and recognition

All learners who sit an ACER Certificate test receive a digital report of their results with detailed feedback and resources to help strengthen their understanding of their own learning progression. If successful, your child will be awarded a formal ACER Certificate along with a lapel badge to recognise their achievement.

Learners can sit an ACER Certificate test whenever they are ready to do so, irrespective of their age or grade. The tests are one-hour, online and administered under formally supervised conditions.

More about ACER Certifcates

The ACER Certificate in Mathematics assesses mathematical and numeracy skills across all strands of the curriculum:

  • Number and algebra
  • Measurement and geometry
  • Statistics and probability

The assessment tasks assess students’ mathematical knowledge, as well as their ability to apply their knowledge and reasoning skills to solve everyday problems.

Students who achieve the ACER Certificate in Mathematics Level 1 demonstrate mathematical and numeracy skills. Number and Algebra, Measurement and Geometry, Statistics and Probability are assessed. The assessment tasks provide information about students' mathematical knowledge, as well as their ability to apply their knowledge and reasoning skills to solve everyday problems.

Students who achieve the ACER Certificate in Mathematics Level 2 demonstrate mathematical and numeracy skills. Number and Algebra, Measurement and Geometry, Statistics and Probability are assessed. The assessment tasks provide information about students' mathematical knowledge, as well as their ability to apply their knowledge and reasoning skills to solve everyday problems.

Students who achieve the ACER Certificate in Mathematics Level 3 demonstrate mathematical and numeracy skills. Number and Algebra, Measurement and Geometry, Statistics and Probability are assessed. The assessment tasks provide information about students' mathematical knowledge, as well as their ability to apply their knowledge and reasoning skills to solve everyday problems.

Students who achieve the ACER Certificate in Mathematics Level 4 demonstrate the ability to apply knowledge and skills in problem solving situations, which sometimes may be unfamiliar. Understanding a range of different content areas may be required to answer a question.

Students who achieve the ACER Certificate in Mathematics Level 5 demonstrate the ability to apply knowledge and skills in problem solving situations, including the use of advanced algebra, statistics and geometry. Understanding a range of different content areas may be required to answer a question.

The ACER Certificate in Reading Comprehension assesses reading comprehension and vocabulary skills. The tests use increasingly complex narrative, information and persuasion texts that range from familiar contexts with simple vocabulary to unfamiliar contexts with technical and sophisticated vocabulary. Students are assessed on three key skills:

  • To find information
  • To infer and interpret meaning
  • To critique and reflect on the ideas and information presented

Students who achieve the ACER Certificate in Reading Comprehension Level 1 demonstrate a variety of simple comprehension skills including managing low-level competing information in a range of familiar common text types that may include some implied or unfamiliar ideas. Students who achieve the ACER Certificate in Reading

Students who achieve the ACER Certificate in Reading Comprehension Level 2 demonstrate a variety of simple comprehension skills. They manage some competing information in many common text types that are largely familiar, but include an element of complexity such as an unusual voice, a subtle implication or a non-linear timeline.

Students who achieve the ACER Certificate in Reading Comprehension Level 3 demonstrate a wide variety of comprehension skills including reading closely to make careful distinctions and identifying subtle, scattered clues to support an inference in texts with complex aspects such as unusual diagrams, extended metaphors, difficult vocabulary or long, dense sentences.

Students who achieve the ACER Certificate in Reading Comprehension Level 4 locate and link pieces of related information, some of which are deeply embedded in unrelated contexts, across extended complex texts. They interpret highly technical or abstract ideas. They can identify diverse relationships, inherent contradictions and plausible alternative conclusions. Students infer how subtle text features undermine or emphasise certain meanings. Increasingly they make critical evaluations and analyse a variety of subtle authorial techniques including irony and voice.

Students who achieve the ACER Certificate in Reading Comprehension Level 5 are expert readers. They demonstrate this through linking pieces of related deeply embedded information when there is strongly competing information. They interpret complex technical ideas, dense language and complex, abstract ideas. They are able to compare subtle differences between ideas and identify nuanced relationships. They confidently make sophisticated, critical evaluations and are able to identify logical flaws in complex texts. They extrapolate key ideas from the text and construct complex hypotheses.

All learners are eligible to sit an ACER Certificate test, although the certificates are not recommended for learners younger than 8 years old. Adults learners are eligible and encouraged to attempt an ACER Certificate.

Typically, Certificates are attempted in order starting with Level 1. In some cases, learners who provide evidence of higher achievement may be allowed to commence at a higher level. Please contact ACER Academy office for more information.

The test is delivered online and consists of 50 multiple choice questions.

To be awarded an ACER Certificate, learners are required to complete the certificate test under strict, invigilated conditions. The Test Administration Manual provides detailed instructions and guidelines.

Tests can be administered at the ACER offices in Melbourne and Brisbane or with a school. Schools do not need to be registered with ACER Academy to be able to provide appropriate supervised conditions.

Learners who are not successful in achieving a certificate still receive a feedback report on their strengths and weaknesses.

A learner may attempt to pass a given certificate level for a subject up to two times without further cost. The test can be attempted once per school term.

If a learner fails to pass a certificate test they may resit the exam. If a learner fails to pass a certificate twice they will be required to purchase an additional enrolment. Each enrolment purchased allows two attempts at a selected level within a subject.
